Building TripCache: A Travel Expense Tracker for iOS

·267 words·2 mins·

After a year of learning, designing, and building, I’m excited to share the release of my new app, TripCache — a travel expense tracker built for iOS, available on iPhone and iPad with iOS 18+.

Why Did I Build This App?
#

TripCache started as a solution to my own problem. As someone who travels frequently, I found it surprisingly difficult to track expenses in a way that felt simple and organized. I tried several apps on the App Store, but none fully matched my needs and the ones that came close required steep subscription fees.

The Start
#

Back in 2008, when smartphones and apps were just starting to reshape everyday life, I remember being completely captivated by them. Watching Steve Jobs at the 2008 WWDC and discovering some of the original iOS developers like Tapbots, whose apps set a high bar for design and quality, left a lasting impression on me and continue to inspire me today. Back then, building something like this felt like a distant dream. Today, releasing TripCache on the App Store feels like a small but meaningful step toward that dream.

That said, I’ve also reached a point where I’m actively reducing my reliance on Big Tech in general. Even so, releasing an indie app is a personal milestone, and one that would have meant a great deal to my younger self.
